Discover Danube

On 29th of June each year, on the occasion of Danube Day, the 14 countries of the Danube River Basin jointly celebrate one of Europe's greatest river systems, along with its people and the wildlife that rely on it. Danube Day has been celebrated since 2004, and this year in Serbia, under the slogan "Discover Danube", it will be accompanied by numerous events, in which the Port Governance Agency will participate.

The Danube is the second longest European river, right after the Volga. With a 2,850-kilometer-long course, the "Amazon of Europe" flows through several capitals, before flowing through the delta into the Black Sea in Romania and Ukraine. The European Union pays special attention to the Rhine-Danube Corridor, as one of the nine multimodal European corridors of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) network. The Danube connects the east and west of Europe, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean and is the only direct connection of Central Europe with the Black Sea.

The Danube flows through Serbia in the length of 588 kilometres, from Bezdan to Timok. On its shores there are numerous protected natural assets, archaeological sites, fortresses and cultural sights. In regard to that, the Danube is known as "tourist magnet" for years, especially for cruise enthusiasts.

The Port Governance Agency is working intensively on exploiting and promoting the potential of the Danube for cargo and passenger transport.

The Agency is carrying out activities on the project "Awake the Danube", which aims to develop cruising and domestic liner traffic in the Upper and Lower Danube. The project contributes to the development of cities and the promotion of the cultural heritage of this area. In that way, the cities on the banks of the Danube will be marked on the tourist map of Europe and Serbia will be brought closer to the European leaders in nautical traffic.

Along with the opening of new international passenger terminals, the Agency is working on the development of the marinas. Marinas are an important segment of nautical traffic and complete the tourist offer of our country.
