The 5th session of the Expert Group on Ports and Port Operations of the Danube Commission was held on March 26, 2025, in Budapest. The meeting was chaired by Mr. Vuk Perović, Director of the Port Governance Agency, and brought together more than 50 representatives of ports and port authorities from Danube Region countries, as well as delegates from international organizations such as DG Move, ViaDonau, Pro Danube International, and others.
Mr. Perović emphasized the importance of continuous exchange of experience and information to strengthen the competitiveness and sustainability of Danube ports. “The strong participation of regional port authorities demonstrates our joint commitment to improving port operations along the Danube. The studies, pilot projects, and research involving institutions from the Danube basin reflect our shared dedication to the long-term development of ports and inland waterway transport. The Agency’s chairmanship has enabled us to showcase our work and remain aligned with the latest European trends and demands, particularly in the context of the energy transition and new port sector initiatives,” he stated.
The meeting addressed key strategic topics for the Danube Region, including the EU regulatory framework for inland navigation, the digitalization of port operations, as well as decarbonization measures and the adoption of sustainable energy solutions in the port sector. Within the thematic session dedicated to “greening” ports, participants explored ideas for the use of alternative fuels in navigation and port operations and were introduced to the results of the European Commission’s Green Inland Ports study, which offers sustainability guidelines for inland ports.
As part of the session’s good practice segment, Ms. Ksenija Hajduković presented the Agency’s role in preparing for the upcoming international exhibition EXPO 2027, specifically in terms of developing new infrastructure for international passenger traffic. She highlighted that the new international passenger terminals in the capital will significantly contribute not only to the success of the exhibition but also to improved outcomes in Serbia’s nautical tourism seasons after the event.
Participants concluded that cooperation within the Expert Group has been further strengthened, laying a solid foundation for future activities and initiatives.
This year’s session also marked the conclusion of the Agency’s two-year chairmanship of the group. The next meeting of the Expert Group is scheduled for March 26, 2026.
